Creating a beautiful and functional space requires a well-thought-out interior design process. As an interior designer, I’ve developed a step-by-step approach that helps me deliver exceptional results for my clients.
In this article, I’ll walk you through my Interior design process, from defining the project’s scope to the final implementation.
Step 1: Defining the Scope of the Project
The first step in my interior design process is to define the project’s scope with the client.
I meet with my client to discuss their needs, preferences, and budget. It’s essential to establish a good rapport with the client and truly understand their goals and needs for the project.
Ask your client these questions to help you define the project’s goal:
- What is the purpose of the space?
- What style or aesthetic do you prefer?
- What colors do you like?
- What is your budget for the project?
- Are there any special considerations or requirements?
💡 Personal Insight: Your client’s space must express who they are.
Consider asking them personal questions, like What are their hobbies or personal interests?
The more you understand your clients, the more easily you will be able to design a space that truly expresses your client — For Instance:
• If your client enjoys reading, You may consider building a comfortable reading nook
• If your client is a musician, you may consider space for instruments or sound equipment.
The more information you gather, the more you can create a design plan that meets the client’s needs and fits their budget.
Step 2: Research and Inspiration
After outlining the project’s scope, it’s time to seek inspiration and research.
I’d recommend exploring various resources, such as magazines, Pinterest, and Instagram. However, I would recommend not solely relying on the Internet for inspiration. Take the time to observe and appreciate your surroundings.
Go for a leisurely walk, immerse yourself in nature’s beauty, and let it inspire you. Nature itself is the ultimate designer, offering a variety of color schemes and patterns that can captivate your imagination. Personally, I have found my favorite color palettes by observing the natural world rather than relying solely on online resources.
So don’t underestimate the power of nature as a source of inspiration for your interior design projects.
💡 Personal Insight: Always encourage your clients to share any inspiration they have with you, whether it’s a specific color palette, a furniture piece they love, or a style they enjoy.
Step 3: Create Moodboard & Design Concept
The next step in my interior design process is to create a Moodboard.
A Moodboard is a visual tool that helps you to visualize the design concept and make it tangible. It’s also a brilliant tool for communicating the design concept to your client and getting their feedback.
The Moodboard you design should include
- Colors
- Textures and Materials
- Inspiration
- The Interior Style
- Furniture and Decor
💡 Personal Insight: Design is a collaborative process between you and your client.
Use Moodboards to present different options, and the client provides feedback on what they like and don’t. By working together, you can ensure the project is in the right direction.
Step 4: Space Planning and Layout
Space planning is the functional part of the design process.
In Space Planning, don’t think much about aesthetics but functionality and flow in the space, which means you have to consider various factors like:
- Traffic Low: How the users move in the space
- Best Furniture arrangements maximize the space.
- Focal Points: What are the best spots you can create your design around so it is visually comfortable?
Step 5: 3D Rendering & Visualization
I create 3D renderings of the space to help my client visualize the design in detail.
3D rendering is a great way to ensure your work aligns with the client’s expectations and to make any necessary adjustments before moving on to the final implementation, which is cost-effective.
There are many software programs and tools you can use for 3D rendering.
I prefer using 3ds Max for modeling and Vray for rendering, as they allow me to get realistic results. However, they are a bit complicated. So if you are a beginner, I’d recommend you go with SketchUp because it’s user-friendly, efficient, and produces high-quality images.
Step 6: FF&E, Implementation, and Project Management
The final step in my interior design process is implementation.
In this stage, you work with contractors, suppliers, and other professionals to bring the design plan to life.
You coordinate with the different parties involved in the project to ensure that everything runs smoothly and on schedule. You also have to ensure that the project stays within the client’s budget and that there are no surprises along the way.

Step 7: Final Touches (Extra)
Details are not details; they make the design.
